Pointiness Edge Detection For Eevee

by cfc in Surfacing

Pointiness is one of the best ways to mask edges and apply edge wear in Cycles, and now you can finally use it in EEVEE too!

Cycles has always had the "edge" over EEVEE when it comes to edge detection, because the Geometry shader node's Pointiness output only works in Cycles. Without Pointiness, edge detection in EEVEE has always been a challenge. There are a number of workarounds, like utilizing ambient occlusion or vector math, but they all come with significant drawbacks.

Pointiness for EEVEE does exactly what it says on the tin: It brings Pointiness to the EEVEE rendering engine, providing easy, reliable edge detection. It's designed to be a drop-in replacement for Cycles Pointiness, so if you have a Cycles shader that requires Pointiness, you can easily convert it to an EEVEE shader using Pointiness for EEVEE.

Applying Pointiness for EEVEE is easy: Add the Pointiness for EEVEE geometry nodes modifier to your object, then add the Pointiness for EEVEE shader node group to your shader. That's it! You're all set, and you can now use Pointiness exactly the same way you would use it in Cycles, and expect to get virtually identical results.

Pointiness for EEVEE is an easy, reliable way to achieve edge detection effects in EEVEE that were previously only possible in Cycles.
