Life-changing addon. This has become my go-to addon to make fill my scene with people and then animate them. I mean, you can have like 5 different characters in less than an hour. Quality stuff... quality stuff

This is incredible, at first I didn't believe it would be so good, but it exceeded all my expectations. It is fast, simple, and the results are stunning.

This is, to me, the first serious in-Blender solution for automated human creation. There are a few others out there, but unlike those Human Generator really gets the anatomy and topology correct, along with rather good out-of-the-box skin details.

I'm rating this five stars because, as an initial release, I think it's rather good at what it does; however, the good that it does isn't deep enough...yet. Here and there it's oddly superficial. More on that in a bit.

Both as a Unity hobbyist and as someone who likes sculpting human anatomy, the models created are both solidly realistic and suited for game engines. The default base mesh of my generated character came out to 25k quads; I easily got it down to just under 8k quads using the Decimate modifier, with the mesh still looking clean.

The texture sets can easily be used within an engine like Unity. It's 4k PBR, with the UV neatly split into 2k quadrants for the different body regions. The face gets its own 2k quadrant while the rest of the body occupies the remaining. This is all more than enough for game engines, though for those only interested in offline rendering it's merely an acceptable minimum; any lower and the pore details of the body will begin to get lost by the resolution.

One major critique is that customization for the body seems oddly shallow. For a strong example, there's sort of only one generic breast shape, with the slider permitting only a small B-cup or a large B-cup. Apply that example to nearly every facet of the human body and you get an idea for how minuscule the options seem. There's the option to change height, as well as global sliders to make them overweight/skinny/muscular; but it's almost as if you're always using the same person's body and only changing if they've decided to be fit or to really let themselves go.

Face customization is great. Let me make that clear. No deep complaints to be had here. I'm sure a few more sliders can be added in the future, but I'd be very happy if the options for the body were as plentiful as they are for the face.

Clothing and hair creation is good. The clothes meshes are of high quality. They're off to a good start. It's now simply a matter of adding more varied clothes and hair content in the coming months.

Major thing to note: the body textures have underwear baked in. Think of an unmodded Elder Scrolls game when you undress your character. Along with this the mesh is, in those particular areas, entirely smooth. Not even the male nipple has modeled form. It strikes me as a tad unserious and inconvenient. Whatever it is you're making, you're locked into a wholly SFW creation.

All in all, I eagerly await where the developers take this asset. It can shape up to become one of Blender's most well known tools.

Thank you for your extensive review! These thorough insights will definitely help others decide if Human Generator is the right tool for them.

As for the body customizations, the main reason they are currently controlled by the 4 global sliders is to make sure the clothing system was fully working before adding more complexity. We are still looking into the best way to make body deformations work with the outfit system. Currently, every body-deformation slider requires its own shapekey on the clothing objects.

If you send us an email at support@humgen3d.com we can discuss the SFW nature of the textures.

Hi! This is an awesome add-on! I rated it five star but I am sure you guys can enhance it including a native american ethnicity. I am sure you will consider adding it in the future. Anyway it is always possible to fine tune your character adding a new shape key and modelling the features desired. Congratulations kids, this is a great piece of work!

We are definitely looking at adding more options in the future, perhaps also in the form of more ethnicity presets. Thanks for reviewing!

Thanks for making this. Got the commercial one, Planning on using in my Games, Will post back after some tinkering.

Btw Can I add custom costumes/dresses and skin scars to models ?

Thanks for the review! Yes, you can definitely add custom clothes. We will post a tutorial about this soon. Skin scars are currently not natively supported, but you can of course add them manually (I would suggest doing it via normal map detail)

Great addon. Question, are you planning to add a facerig? or more shapekeys to be able to do face animation/lip sync?

    • Oliver Post

We are definitely looking into multiple options to add more control to the expressions. We're not sure if this will be with more shapekeys or also an option for a facerig. Thanks for the review!

From download to install to skimming the instructions to rendering a pretty realistic human in, I dunno, 15, 20 minutes? That's got to be worth $50 of anybody's money. I can't wait to see where this goes in the future.

Of course it needs more of everything: poses, hairstyles, clothing (I would happily pay for themed packs of these, like period costumes, industrial gear, spacesuits, military fatigues) – but for a v1.0 made by two people, this is just stupidly good!

Awesome to hear it was easy to get started! Thanks for the review! And yes, we definitely think the content pack system will allow for some pretty wild expansions
