This is a review for Holgram Effect Shader

Highly recommended. Hoping for ease-of-use revisions in the pipeline.

I had a bit of a rocky start with this shader – due to wonkiness of Blender 4.2. Hologram materials were displaying BLACK in some scenes. I reached out to the developer who responded quickly with updated download that included transparency in the hologram. He also has a very useful video that explains how to edit the hologram shader in Blender 4.2 (simple – remove a couple of nodes in the shader editor).

If you are using Blender 4.2, this video is for you. Here is the link for the video

Regarding transparency, right now it doesn’t look like there is a way for me to adjust transparency or to toggle between transparent and non-transparent. Hopefully, the developer will revise this already useful asset to include these features – or direct me to them in case I just missed them.

Here is how I ended up accessing the shader. After purchasing, I was presented to download two different *.blend files. In my case, one file contained the shader for the fully opaque shader original). The other file (revised by developer), for the semi-transparent version of the shader. I opened each file. The material was already populated with the hologram shader. I selected the hologram material in the Materials Properties tab, renamed it (as (“Hologram transparent,” in one file and “Hologram Opaque” in the file with the opaque hologram. I then right clicked and then marked each as an Asset. Saved. Then in Blender, go to Edit->Preferences->File Paths-> under Asset Libraries, include the folder that has the *.blend files with your hologram material assets. Save preferences Open up your asset browser in Blender and scroll to your hologram assets. Drag and drop onto your object.

Yea, I know it’s complicated. I tried just saving them to the Material Library in blender, but the library tenaciously refused to update material revisions and stuck with the original version of the material. Classic case of “Blender does things the way it wants.” Fine.

Overall, splendid add on. Great for opaque holograms out-of-the-box. Hopefully transparency management options are in the update pipeline.

Thanks to developer, HuyKhoi2407, for this lovely asset.
