If you notice some performance issue in the future, think of maybe using low poly versions (that's why you can force the ghost visibility of a hidden object).
I can explain deeper on the Discord if you want ;).
I didn't try planar meshes, perhaps putting 0 into the pow value would help the visibility.
Ideal would be some kind of edge shader, but I'm not sure we can access to the Stencil Buffer of the viewport, I'll give it a try!
I'd be glad if you could explain a bit more about your marker feature (pm, Discord).
