E10's Skyscraper Lights

by Eddy "E10" Juillerat in Surfacing

This is a Blender procedural shader that creates skyscrapers' style lights.
For cityscapes at night from far to medium distance. Not made for closeups. If you animate the settings, you'll see the organic way that the lights appears. You can also create a timelapse of city lighting up to the night coming, combined with a speedy falling sunset with for example a Nishita Sky Texture.

It tries to replicate the feeling of big buildings, towers and skyscrapers from big cities at night or nightfall. You can change overall coverage, large windows coverage and colors, small windows coverage and colors, offices width, overall size, wall material attributes, roof material attributes (it gives vertical faces the Skycraper's walls and by autodetection from a slope gives the roof material).

Works for Cycles and Eevee (except for the border of the edge of the mesh).

Best practices:
- Start from the default settings for each parameter. The more subtle you change them, the better it looks. In general, too high values gives less realistic result.

- Attribute the base material E10's SkyScraper Lights to all objects, then duplicate it and change material attributes to some of the objects to create variations manually, ot select objects using the menu Select > Select Random. Make subtle variations of windows' sizes and intensity, but not too much on light's colors, they don't change that much from one place to another.

Made with Blender 3.2.1

The next step will be to make it more versatile, to make spaceships lights and animated flashing lights, like for a big computer machine.

- The biggest will be to make the same material for day scenes with randomization for colors, windows size and so on. It will help to create an entire city buildings with enough variations by day or night.
- Real-size of the mesh model in meters in the .blend file.

- Add a few differents material variations examples, add some meshes.

- Create a scene from the Blender Guppy's addon Random Flow.

- Make a variation of this shader to fit SF machines flashing diodes lights, or fit the body of a giant spaceship.

- Make the noise shape settings available, or custom a image possible.
