Character My Curves: 3D Objects To Abstract Curves

Character My Curves Documentation:

Understanding this documentation is easier after you have watched the demo video uploaded to YouTube.

Character My Curves is a Blender addon that allows you to quickly generate abstract curves based on your character's shape, ready for use in Geometry Nodes.

How to use:

  1. Installation: Install the addon through Blender's preferences.

  2. Access: You'll find the "Character My Curves" addon in the viewport sidebar.

  3. Generate Curves: Select the character object in your scene and click the "Generate Character Curves" button.

    • The addon will automatically duplicate and hide your original character object, creating an auxiliary object with the Geometry Nodes modifier applied.

  4. Modify Curves: Navigate to the "Modifiers" tab in the "Properties" panel to access the modifier settings and adjust the curves:

    • Main Object: Select the original (now hidden) character object. This is essential for the modifier to work.

    • Quantity: Control the number of curves and their start/end coordinates. Caution: High curve count significantly increases geometry; Blender might crash on less powerful systems.

    • Distribution: Adjust parameters to fine-tune the curve distribution.

    • SHRINKWRAP STRENGTH: Controls how closely the curves follow the main object's shape.

    • Material: Apply a custom material to the curves for desired visual results in your final render.

Advanced Usage:

  • Duplication: To create more complex setups, you can duplicate the auxiliary object (using the addon's button) and adjust the modifier settings on each duplicate.

    • Important: The "SHRINKWRAP STRENGTH" value is not duplicated. You need to duplicate the "SHRINKWRAP" Node Group within Geometry Nodes to control the strength for each individual object.

  • Curve Shape: For subtle changes to curve appearance, enter the "SHRINKWRAP" Node Group in Geometry Nodes and modify the "Geometry Proximity" node. It defaults to "Faces," but you can switch to "Edges" or "Points" for different effects.
