An Standards Asset Library

by Howard Lawson in Models

This kit is a collection of models based on the Army-Navy cataloging system (AN Standards) created during World War II. The intent is to vastly speed up the creation of 3D vintage aircraft models for real-time applications by compiling this hardware into an organized library.

Like many things this was born out of necessity. For my B-17G bomber project I needed a library of hardware and effects. Instead of just creating the items I needed I decided to take on the task of modeling the library of AN Standards.

The library consist of 450+ individual items across more than 15 categories of hardware such as bolts, screw, nuts, gages, clamps, pulleys, and switches. Each item has been individually modeled in accordance to the original specifications and dimensions and is ready to use via Blender's Asset Browser.

Even though this kit is designed for vintage aircraft, don’t let that stop your creativity. These assets would also look great as greeble details anywhere you’d like to add some vintage military aesthetic.

Production

This library was created with the production studio in mind and will save an exhaustive amount of time. Hundreds of hours have been invested in the research and creation of this library. Studios with a single artist to studios with a team would benefit from the cost savings of having to create these assets from scratch.

These assets don't necessarily proportionally scale (i.e. a small nut and scaling to a larger size). Having a library of various sizes brings the advantage of not worrying about scale issues.

This library is especially useful if you have construction/maintenance drawings for an aircraft which specify the hardware to be used. Search the Asset Library for the AN number needed, then drag the corresponding Asset to Viewport.

Real-Time

All assets are created for a real-time, low poly environment.

If additional polygon detail is needed, Creases have been added to control hard edges for adding a Subdivision Modifier to quickly increase model fidelity. Though not always the go-to solution it is an option available for speed.

Scale

All items are modeled 1:1 scale with their real-world equivalents.

Texturing

All texturing is done procedurally with Blender's Shader Nodes. Text and data placards are also done within Blender's Shader Nodes with color ID maps for flexibility.
