2018 Blender Market Review
As we celebrate the start of 2019 I wanted to take a look back at 2018. It has been an amazing past twelve months (and more) on the Blender Market.
This last year was a whirlwind of activity, from helping hundreds of new Creators launch their first product, to the 4 hugely successful sales we ran, to the rapid growth of the market as a whole. Let's take a closer look and see what was accomplished.
2018 Highlights
Starting in the last quarter of 2017 and then continuing through 2018 the Blender Market saw exponential growth. Our average monthly revenue grew from $39,551.905 in 2017 to $101,195.09 in 2018. This huge boost in revenue directly benefits everyone involved, Creators, the Blender Development Fund, and of course ourselves and our ability to maintain and improve the Blender Market.
- 150% revenue growth in 2018 compared to 2017
- Gross revenue of $1,243,956.68 in 2018
- $985,896.2 was paid out to Creators
- $20,289.35 donated to the Blender Development Fund
This kind of growth is incredibly humbling, exciting, and of course puts more pressure on us to maintain a high quality bar and good experience for everyone.
Goals for 2019
Moving into 2019 we are energized and more focused than ever to make the Blender Market the place to buy and sell professional tools and resources for Blender. In order to do this and to keep raising the bar, we have three main focuses for 2019.
Empowering Creators
The Blender Market is nothing without its Creators. Our core focus in 2019 is to empower each of you, the Creators, by giving you more control over your business and providing more tools to help you grow. We aim to give you more tools to reach wider audiences and to connect more closely with your existing customers.
Revamp Blender Market's Branding
In June the Blender Market will be five years old! Given that we'll be half a decade old we feel it's time to refresh our look. We've been exploring new branding for over a year now and while we're not there yet we're hoping to launch new branding this year for the Blender Market.
Hire a Blender Market Developer
As a CG Cookie project we have always had a lot of overlap with our education project, including the team. Effectively we've been poaching CG Cookie's sole developer for a full five years. What that means is we had to divide up our focus, only doing development every other month or so. Doing this worked well, Nick Haskins has skills! But the two projects have grown to the point that it's now too much to handle and so it's finally time to hire a dedicated Ruby on Rails developer for the Blender Market! By adding a full-time developer to the Blender Market team we'll be able to push out fixes and new features much faster.
We aim to hire a full-time developer within the first few months of 2019.
Last year was truly the first year that the Blender Market proved its potential, showcasing the difference it can make in people's lives. Starting as a small idea in 2014, hatched in a Colorado kitchen, to this year becoming a viable and profitable platform. All of this is thanks to the support of our Creators and customers. Our goal with the Blender Market is the same today as it was when we started, nearly five years ago: to empower independent artists & developers by building you a trusted platform and means to make a living with Blender.
