Hair Optimizer
The Hair Optimizer is designed to reduce the number of points in hair geometry, improving memory consumption and rendering times in Blender.
As a character artist, I understand how challenging it can be to render hair in Blender. The software offers limited options for optimizing poly count and provides no visual feedback on hair geometry resolution. This can quickly consume your VRAM, making it nearly impossible to render complex scenes using the GPU.
To address these issues, I created the Hair Optimizer, a tool that gives you full control over hair quality while providing real-time visual feedback in the viewport. This allows you to precisely determine the optimal number of points needed for the best rendering results, saving memory for other parts of your scene.
Key Features:
Camera Culling
Automatically removes hair that is out of the camera's range, optimizing only the visible parts of the scene.-
Curve Resampling
- Redistributes points evenly across hair curves for a more balanced geometry.
- Adjusts hair resolution based on camera position, angle, and distance, reducing geometry on hair curves not facing the camera.
Curve Smoothing
Smooths low-resolution curves using NURBS or Catmull-Rom methods before resampling, enhancing hair quality while maintaining performance.Curvature-Based Optimization
Reduces points in areas of low curvature, further refining point distribution and optimizing memory usage.-
Preview Mode
Visualize the resolution of each hair strand in real time and monitor the total number of points in the optimized geometry.How to Use
1. Add the Hair Optimizer to Blender
Place the Hair Optimizer tool in your Assets Library folder and restart Blender to load it.2. Assign the Hair Optimizer Modifier
- Select the hair curves.
- Open the Modifiers tab, click Add Modifier, and locate the Hair Optimizer under the Unassigned section.
3. Set the Surface and Sculpted Objects
In the Hair Optimizer modifier, assign:
- Camera Object: The render camera used in the scene.
- Surface Object: The object where the hair is attached.
